James Halliday Australian Wine Companion 2013While deeply fruited and expressive, there is an elegance and spicy complexity that is enchanting;; fragrant spied plums and a lick of star anise; the palate is silky and unctuous, showing the sex appeal of the variety at an early stage of development. Rating 94 Winefront 2012 (www.winefront.com.au) Campbell MattinsonPure, sinewy, bready. 10% whole bunch, wild yeast, foot stomped. Production of two barrels only (both second use, for ten months only). It’s all estate grown but because the yields were so incredibly low in 2010 – the vines were still recovering from the damage caused by the 2009 fires – this release was grown on both the estate’s oldest vines and from the 1998 plantings.Mid palate oomph but then it sets sail for the finish. Meat, spice, black cherry, star anise. Remarkable combination of brightness and density. Built to age, without question. Ripples of muscular tannin. Love it. Rating 94+ points
